Interest in the Japanese Language is constantly growing throughout the globe, and as a result a series of lectures by guest speakers at an international seminar, "Le JAPONAIS 2000", was held in France at the very beginning of the 3rd Millennium. Not only various aspects of the language but also its presence in theoretical linguistic research were the subjects discussed on that occasion. Most of the seminar lectures are included in this volume. They deal with problems such as the structure of old and modern Japanese, theoretical implications of linguistic studies in the field of Japanese vocabulary and grammar, teaching methodology as well as electronic dictionary building and machine translation technology.
The seminar received grants from The Japan Foundation in 2000 and 2001. It was organized by the Unité Mixte de Recherche Civilisation Japonaise (UMR 8073), a research group working under the joint auspices of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (EPHE) and College de France (CdF).
